Painting plein air provides a tangible link with the landscape. The changing light or turning tide compels the need to be economic with detail. The handling of the paint is dynamic and arbitrary, conveying the freshness of a sketch. I often sketch and paint on site which helps with my studio paintings. Working through a painting I am constantly looking for balance while keeping the medium loose and playful. The subject is a shifting scene, pushing the paint one way and dragging it the other; replicating movement in nature. The resulting surface is an organic and whimsical landscape.
Photography has also become an integral part of my working practice; in the studio I manipulate the digital image to inform the atmosphere, creative direction and as counterpart to the painting.
My influences come from the Romantic era of Constable, Gainsborough and Turner; employing the technique of dark grounds and depictions of the sublime qualities of nature, and the Impressionists of Monet and Whistler and their use of light and colour.
